Now in its 29th season in Lenox Shakespeare & Company is altering its normal "house-divided' schedule and presenting most of its current season under a single roof. Back in the days when the company resided at The Mount, the Edith Wharton home in Lenox, the season would be divided among as many as five different performance spaces, indoors and outdoors. When it first moved to its current location it had a variety of venues to call upon, with the Founder's Theater serving as the home of its major productions and their studio pieces, or smaller works, presented in the elegant parlor of their upper roadside mansion. That building has been sold and the company has consolidated its efforts. Interestingly they are still selling what would have been their more intimate plays on a more intimate scale.
Their new season features two Shakespearean plays, one Italian classic, one Edith Wharton adaptation (they can't seem to do a season without one), three new plays, and at their Free Bankside Festival (outdoors) a series of lectures, readings, garden strolls and assorted other programs. Their season is currently one of the longest production periods in The Berkshires, stretching from May 26 through October 7.
Tina Packer is still at the helm, still the artistic director, but she has been joined by a team of players, each of whom brings a special skill set to the mixture. Michael Hammond is her Associate Artistic Director and Mark W. Jones is the company's Executive Director.
